What to Do If Your Data Is Hacked or Leaked

Did you receive a message saying your password was found in a data breach? Or maybe you suddenly lost access to one of your accounts?
If yes, your data might have been hacked — or exposed in a breach. But don’t panic. There are immediate steps you can take to secure your online identity.

1. Change Your Passwords Immediately

Start with your primary email account, then work your way through your most important apps — especially banking, e-commerce, and cloud storage.
Use unique and strong passwords for each account. Avoid reusing the same password across platforms.

2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

If 2FA is available, turn it on.
This adds an extra security step — like a code sent to your phone — that hackers can’t bypass even if they know your password.

3. Log Out of All Sessions

Most major services like Gmail and Facebook let you log out from all devices. Do this to kick out any unauthorized users that may still be logged in.

4. Check Your Bank or E-Wallet Transactions

If you’ve saved payment details on websites or apps, check your transaction history immediately.
Report any suspicious activity to your bank or provider. If needed, request a new card.

5. Use a Password Manager

Long-term, a password manager is your best friend. It helps generate and store secure credentials so you won’t have to reuse or remember them all.
