How Does a Website Load on Your Screen?

Every time you click a link or enter a URL in your browser, a fast but complex process takes place behind the scenes to display the webpage on your screen. It begins with a system called DNS, or Domain Name System. The browser sends a request to the DNS to translate the domain name, like example.com, into an IP address, which points to the exact server where the website is hosted. Once the IP address is identified, your browser sends another request to that server asking for the contents of the page.

The server responds by sending the website’s data—usually HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and images—back to your browser in pieces. Your browser then processes the code, lays out the structure, applies the styles, loads the media, and executes any interactive features. This entire sequence typically happens in just a few seconds. Understanding how this works is helpful not only for developers but also for anyone curious about the technology that powers everyday internet usage.
